The Arabic word Jameel denotes beauty. While it implies both beauty in shape and in behavior, the Quraan uses primarily it to refer to beauty in behavior. It is mentioned six times in the Quraan.

Offering advises on Nikah, an Ustaadh indicated that if a couple heed the message of (at least) 3 Aayaat in the Quraan that feature the word Jameel, this will Insha Allah we sufficient for them in the upkeep of the marriage.

1. Beautiful Patience

The phrase ‘sabrun jameel’ is most famous from the saying of Sayyidina Ya’qoob AS, who upon hearing the news of the dissapearance of his son Yusuf, as told in Surah Yusuf, said:

But [as for myself,] patience in adversity is most goodly [in the sight of Allah]; and it is to Allah [alone] that I pray to give me strength to bear the misfortune which you have described to me.”

Allah SWT also instructs in Surah Maárij:

فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا

Therefore [O Believer] endure all adversity with beautiful patience.

Abundant patience(exercised in the most beautiful way) with the faults, slips and weaknesses of one’s partner is hence an essential ingredient for any successful marriage.

2. Beautiful Forgiveness

In Surah al Hijr, Verse 85, Allah SWT instructs: “so  forgive  with a beautiful forgiveness”

Applied in marriage, this will require one to let go of the past and the past transgressions of one’s spouse, never to remind them of these and to forgive them wholeheartedly, never grudgingly.

3. Beautiful Avoidance

Allah SWT instructs in Surah Muzzammil: “Avoid them  with  beautiful  avoidance”

If your spouse says or does something that is bound to inflame your emotions, rather withdraw calmly from the situation, follow the Sunnah directives of cooling your anger, control your tongue, and return only once ‘sanity’ has prevailed to deal with the disagreement in a sober and level headed fashion
