Question and Answer:

Q. I often have bad dreams and nightmares. Most of the time I don’t pay attention to these dreams but there are times when I become worried. Is there anything you can advise?

(Query published as received)

A. Bad dreams and nightmares are usually from Shaitaan. Such dreams are not in need of interpretation and you should pay no attention to them. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has advised that upon experiencing a bad dream, you should do as though you are spitting thrice towards your left and ask Allah protection from Shaitaan (recite Ta’awwuz).

Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (Radiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Good dreams are from Allah and bad dreams are from Shaitaan. Whenever you experience a bad dream, do as though you are spitting towards your left thrice and ask Allah protection from Shaitaan. By doing this, the bad dream will not harm you” (Musnad Ahmed, Hadith #: 22593)
