( Question published as Received )
Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

  • In designating the responsibilities of life, Shari’ah has considered the natural temperament of the male and female genders. The natural temperament of a woman is to remain at home.  She would fulfill the household chores and be an effective wife and mother.

A woman practising out of her natural temperament would be acting abnormally and putting undue pressure on her feminine temperament.

It is the male’s responsibility to bear the pressure of the outside world and support his family.

Furthermore, Shari’ah has closed all doors of women becoming victims of the labour world. Immorality is a reality and is in fact, common.

Consider the following statistics from just a few countries/continents:

Europe

“40 to 50% of EU women have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace.”

(European Commission, Harrassment related to sex and Sexual Harassment Law in 33 European Countries: Discrimination vs Dignity (2006))

India

“95% of women and girls feel vulnerable to sexual harassment in public spaces in the city of Delhi”

(International Center for Research on Women and UN Women Foundation, Safe Cities, Delhi Programme, (2013))

Japan

“56% of sexual harassment consultations were made by women”

(Japan Gender Equality Bureau Cabinet Office, “Chapter 6: Violence against women” (2015) p.17)

United States of America

Almost three in ten cases before the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) Are Sex Discrimination Cases.

(EEOC, “Charge Statistics: FY 1997 through FY 2011)

Australia

21% of all complaints to the Australian Human Rights Commission are filed under the Sex Discrimination Act, and 88% of those complaints are sex discrimination in the workplace complaints

(Australian Human Rights Commission “Sexual Harassment” (2007))

Also consider the following survey carried out by the Cosmopolitan:

“Out of the women who said they’ve experienced workplace sexual harassment, 29 percent reported the issue while 71 percent did not. According to the survey, the field with the highest levels of reported sexual harassment is food and service hospitality.”

The role of an air hostess is more challenging. She has to travel extensively and at times, across various time zones. Travelling takes a toll on one’s health. Jet lag is common in air travels. All these issues are indeed more challenging for women.

An airhostess is also expected to make herself appear as presentable as possible.

Advances made towards air hostesses in flight are common and on the rise.

Consider the following:

“According to a new survey from the Hong Kong-based Equal Opportunities Commission, more than one-fourth of all air hosts and hostesses indicated that they had been sexually harassed while on duty in flight over the past 12 months, while nearly half had witnessed or heard about one of their colleagues being sexually harassed.”

If one considers all these challenges, the wisdom of Shari’ah to preserve the honour of women and maintain the feminine temperament is clearly understood.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
