JANUARY /FEBRUARY 2018 UPDATE
Alhamdulillah, we commenced with our Skills Empowerment course (January-June) 2018. The course duration is six months. Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 3.30 pm. The current group consists of twelve dedicated learners. Eight students are Muslim whilst four are non-Muslim. Students are from Malugazi, Overport, Inanda, Mayville and Morningside. Bus fares and daily lunch is provided. Together with the learners we also have a group of dedicated volunteers who assist us daily.
DEENI PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Alhamdulillah in the 3rd week of the course, four students accepted Islam. Madrassah classes are conducted on a daily basis. Volunteers come in regularly to assist with the Madrassah. Students have learnt three Surahs already. They have also learnt Taharah (cleanliness), Wudhu and Ghusl. Much emphasis is placed on the importance of Hayah (modesty). Zohr salaah is performed daily. They are also performing at least two Salaah on their own at home.
After counselling the students, we realised that two students were living with non-Muslim partners out of wedlock. The partners were called in and were spoken to about the importance of Nikah. One partner was a Christian pastor who has since accepted Islam. Both couples agreed to make Nikah, which was performed at the Jamiat head office in Alpine road.
Culinary Class: Learners have thus far cooked: Chicken soup, Vegetable soup, Chicken curry, Rotis, Smoked chicken, Moongh curry, Samoosas, Salads, Sweet pastry.
Sewing/Craft Class: Learners are currently being taught the art of hand stitching, embroidery, beadwork and patchwork.
Students have so far made cell phone bags, baby blankets, cosmetic and toiletry boxes.
Literacy class: Learners are being taught basic English by a retired teacher.
Self Defence: A Self defence programme was conducted as the students expressed that this was much needed in their communities as crime is quite rife.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH (PROJECT H.E.L.P)
- Collection of school items for distribution to needy students. The skills youth group carried out a survey and identified a deserving school. We will be ready for distribution by the end of this week.
- Collection and distribution of used university textbooks to the needy.
- Networked with SANZAF to arrange an industrial sewing machine for a sister from India who needs to generate income.
We have received much interest from the non-Muslim community as well.
SATURDAY MADRASSAH CLASSES
Alhamdulillah, we have commenced with Madrassah classes for the community every Saturday. We have two dynamic Muallimas who are teaching. Learners are coming from as far as Chatsworth.
Alhamdulillah, we have a group of dedicated volunteers for our skills classes. Their reward is with Allah. We have regular meetings with volunteers to ensure a smooth operation.
Alhamdulillah, our donors have been very generous. May Allah Ta’ala grant them khair and barakah. Allah Ta’ala has been very kind to us at SDC. The assistance and support we receive is commendable. We have regular visitors from the community showing an interest and we hope to create awareness and network with the same Insha’Allah.
Jazakallah khair to everyone for their contributions and efforts.
