Moving Children whilst in Salaah

Nasihah (Advice): Rasulullah’s Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam gentle consideration for his grandchildren in Salaah

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah Radhiyallahu Anhu narrates, “We were performing the Esha Salaah with Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam; whenever he went down for Sajdah, Hasan and Husayn (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) would jump on his back. When Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam got up from Sajdah, he would hold them gently and place them upon the ground. This continued (Hasan and Husayn (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) jumping on his back and Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) gently putting them down) till the end of the Salaah…” (Musnad Ahmad)

Question and Answer:

  1. I am a mum of two little kids. A 9 month old and a 3 year old. I am often alone with them at home . During Salaah I have both my kids playing around me at times sitting on me during tashahud or pulling at my clothes, climbing over me in sajdah etc. at time just laying across the musallah. How do I continue with salaah? Is it permissible to physically move them out of the way and continue with Salaah?

(Question published as received)

  1. It is permissible to move your children around in Salaah if they are in the way. You should continue with your Salaah even if you have to pick them up and place them to the side. If required, you may even carry your children in Salaah if the diaper is not messed. (Shaami Vol. 1 page 654)
