SKILLS EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOP UPDATE 2017

The Jamiatul Ulama KZN Skills Development Classes is an empowerment program that strives towards providing a holistic experience in positively developing underprivileged women within our society.

The program runs over a 6-month period and consists of various types of skills training such as:

  • Sewing
  • Culinary Skills
  • Arts & Craft
  • Madrassah Classes
  • Time management Skills
  • Social & Communication Skills

We are striving to deliver the above services within a safe environment, which will be a means of guidance and assistance to those in need.

We have had three Jalsas in the last 2 years with many students having graduated and most are now self-empowered and thus self-sustainable from the confines of their homes. Each graduate thus far has received a brand new sewing machine from the Jamiatul Ulama KZN, which was sponsored by our sister volunteers from the Circle of Care Association.

The skills development program was previously based at the Jamiatul Ulama KZN Welfare Department in Victoria Street, Durban. However, due to security reasons and the inconvenience to volunteers coming into the CBD area, we have now relocated to West Road, Overport, Durban (opposite the old Radio Al-Ansaar).

The new premises in West Road is a house which we are currently renting, and require your assistance in furnishing the house with the necessary equipment needed to create the right environment and learning space.

The following is a list of items that we require at the West Road premises:

  • Kitchen & Room Cabinets/Shelves
  • Curtains
  • Air-conditioners
  • Hardware
  • Garden tools (For the maintenance of a vegetable garden that will sustain the culinary classes)
  • Carpets/Rugs
  • Fans
  • And most importantly, Woman Power – We need YOU to volunteer your time and skills

This is merely a list of the necessary items, however should you have any other contributions or suggestions, we will welcome them.
