When Umar Ibn Al Khattab (radiallahu anhu) was passing away a man came into the gathering and he started praising Umar Ibn Al Khattab (radiallahu anhu). He said, ‘Oh Ameerul Mu’mineen you were great. Oh Ameerul Mu’mineen you did this and you did that.’ Umar (radiallahu anhu) said, ‘Tell me, will you bear testimony to this on the Day of Judgment?’ Then Abdullah Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu) came in to the gathering and Umar (radiallahu anhu) was crying and he was saying, ‘By Allah is I could leave this dunya that nothing is against me and nothing is for me, I would be happy.’

After all that Umar (radiallahu anhu) had achieved Umar (radiallahu anhu) was saying, ‘If I left this dunya with nothing for me and nothing against me, I would be happy!’ And Abdullah Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu) said, ‘Oh Ameerul Mu’mineen, Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) left this dunya and he was happy with you, no two Muslims differed regarding your Caliphate. Everybody was happy with your Caliphate.’ Umar (radiallahu anhu) responded, ‘I know that but it is this matter which concerns me, this Caliphate.’ He then asked Abdullah Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu) to help him sit up. They made him sit up and Umar (radiallahu anhu) touched Abdullah (radiallahu anhu) on his shoulder and he said, ‘Oh Abdullah will you bear testimony for me on the Day of Judgement?’ and Abdullah (radiallahu anhu) said he will be testimony for him on Yawmul Qiyamah.

Umar (radiallahu anhu) was lying in the lap of his son Abdullah Ibn Umar (radiallahu anhu) and he told him to place his cheek on the ground. Abdullah Ibn Umar (radiallahu anhu) said, ‘Why Oh my father?’ kissing the forehead of Umar (radiallahu anhu).  He placed his father’s cheek on the ground. Umar (radiallahu anhu) said, ‘If Umar is destined for Jannah then the pillows of Jannah are softer than your thighs and If Umar is destined for Jahannam then you don’t want a hell bound person on your thigh.’

Umar (radiallahu anhu) told the family, ‘Be moderate in my shroud because if Allah SWT has destined Jannah for me, then Allah SWT will give me better than this. And if Allah SWT has Jahannam destined for me then Allah SWT will strip me of these.’ Then he said, ‘Be moderate in digging my grave because if Allah SWT has Jannah destined for me then He will expand my grave and if Allah SWT has destined Jahannam for me then even that grave will squeeze me.’

Umar (radiallahu anhu) asked Abdullah (radiallahu anhu) to go and ask Aisha (radiallahu anha) is she will allow him to be buried next to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and her father Abu Bakr (radiallahu anhu). He said give her Salaam but don’t say Salaam from Ameerul Mu’mineen because today the Muslims don’t have Ameerul Mu’mineen. Abdullah (radiallahu anhu) knocked on the door of Aisha (radiallahu anha) and he entered the house and Aisha (radiallahu anha) was crying. Abdullah (radiallahu anhu) asked her, ‘Umar requests if you would allow him to be buried next to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and Abu Bak (radiallahu anhu).’

Aisha (radiallahu anha) replied, ‘I reserved that place for myself because one was my husband and the other was my father but I give it to Umar.’ The narration mentions that when Abdullah (radiallahu anhu) was returning to Umar (radiallahu anhu), he was lying down. Umar (radiallahu anhu) asked to be made to sit up. Abdullah (radiallahu anhu) entered the room and said, ‘Oh my father your wish has been granted.’ Umar (radiallahu anhu) said that he had had no greater wish than that.

He said, ‘When I die and you are taking me to be buried ask Aisha again, because maybe because of my status she felt compelled to give me that place, ask her again and if she agrees then bury me there otherwise bury me in the graveyard of the Muslims. Hazrat Umar (radiallahu anhu) passed away and was taken and buried next to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and Abu Bakr (radiallahu anhu).

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said when a man dies he is buried in the earth he was created from. ‘Between my Raudah and my pulpit is a portion from the portions of Jannah. If a man is buried in the place from the land that he is taken and created from that means Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), Hazrat Abu Bakr (radiallahu anhu) and Hazrat Umar (radiallahu anhu) were created from the clay of Jannah. They were created by the clay of Jannah.
