THE SAHABAH- OUR TRUE ROLE MODELS & HEROES

======================

In one Hadith, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) enumerates 15 signs of Qiyamah. Amongst the signs mentioned is the following:

The latter portion of this ummat will curse the former (Tirmizi Vol.2 Pg.44 #2211)

Unfortunately in this day and age this is something which is very rife and rampant especially regarding the Sahaabah (Radiyallahu Anhum). Thus we will discuss in general a little about the status of Sahaabah (Radiyallahu Anhum).

Man has been created with a purpose and goal. However, he has the tendency of being affected by the environment and those around him, thus losing sight of his purpose and goal. It is for this reason that Allah Ta’aala sent the Ambiyaa (Alaihimus Salaam) to this world, with the primary mission of connecting the creation to their Creator, Allah Ta’aala.

This was also the case for the last of all Ambiyaa, the seal of prophet hood, Hadhrat Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), who was sent for this very same purpose. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) conveyed the message of Allah Ta’aala to the Sahaabah, and the Sahaabah in turn conveyed the message of Islam to the ummah. During his blessed lifetime, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) personally made a concerted effort on the Sahaabah, developing within them his mubaarak Sunnah (way of life), till the point where each Sahaabi became a mantle of hidaayat (guidance) for the Ummah. Not only did each Sahaabi become a mantle of hidaayat, rather each one of them became a guiding star of Deen.
======================
In fact, Allah Ta’aala revealed the verses: Allah Ta’aala is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Allah Ta’aala and Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) endorsed each Sahaabi’s completion and perfection in Deen by saying: My Sahaabah are like guiding stars, whichever of them you follow, you will be rightly guided Mishkaat Vol.2 Pg.554).

In one Hadith Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has said:
Allah Ta’aala has chosen me (as His final messenger) and chose for my companionship my Sahaabah.

Hadhrat Abdullah ibnu Mas’ood (Radiyallahu Anhu) states:

Allah Ta’aala assessed the hearts of all mankind and found the heart of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) to best and selected him for prophethood. Thereafter Allah Ta’aala assessed the hearts of the creation after assessing the heart of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and found that the hearts of the Sahabah to be the best of the hearts of the creation. (Musnad Ahmad Vol.6 Pg. 379, #3600)
======================

If one has to study the history of Islam then one will undoubtedly reach this conclusion that it was the nation of Sahaabah that Allah Ta’aala had divinely selected to establish the Deen of Islam in the world. The pillars and the structures of Islam all rest upon the efforts of the Sahaabah. When it came to the preservation of the Quran it was none other than the Sahaabah that were selected for this noble task. When it came to the preservation of the Ahaadith of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), and passing it on to the Taabi’een then again it was the illustrious Sahaabah of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) (May Allah Ta’aala be pleased with them). They were responsible for spreading the word, action and spirit of the entire deen of Islam to the Ummah. Hence one can safely say that the Sahaabah are the foundation and basis of this entire Deen of Islam. Minus the Sahaabah, the authenticity and reliability of the Quran and Hadith of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) will be lost. Hence we understand that the Sahaabah played the greatest and most pivotal role in securing and preserving Deen.
=====================
Thus it is the duty of the Ummah, that we love the Sahaabah, honour and revere them and educate our children about their lives, their actions and their sacrifices for Deen. Insha Allah, this can serve as a means of acquiring the love of Allah Ta’aala, his Rasul (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and treading upon the path of Deen correctly.

The Sahaabah (Radiyallahu Anhum) were given glad tidings of Jannah in this world:

Allah Ta’aala says in the Quraan regarding the Sahaabah:

The Muhaajireen and Ansaar who were amongst the first to believe and lead the way and those who follow them (in belief and love), Allah Ta’aala is well-pleased with them and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow. They will dwell in it forever and. That is great success. (Suratut Taubah: 100)

In another verse Allah Ta’aala says:

None of you can equal those who spent and fought (in battle) before the conquest (of Makkah Mukarramah) Those people are greater in status than those who spent and fought (after the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah). However, Allah has promised good for all. (Suratul Hadid: 10)

These Aayaat are a clear indication that Allah Ta’aala has given the glad tidings to all the Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum) of Jannah without any exception and also to all those who follow their ways till the Day of Qiyamah.

The Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum) were granted forgiveness in this world

Surely Allah Ta’aala has forgiven the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and the Muhajireen and the Ansaar who followed him (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) in the hour of hardship … (Suratut Taubah: 117)

The Sahabah had perfection in Imaan and action

Allah Ta’aala says in the Quraan:

Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) is the Prophet of Allah. Those who are with him (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) are severe against the disbelievers and merciful amongst themselves. You will see them making Ruku and Sajdah seeking a bounty from Allah Ta’aala and His pleasure. Their distinguishing feature is in their faces from the effect of Sajdah. This is their description in the Taurat. And their description in the Injeel is like a sown crop that brings forth its shoot, then makes it strong, then it grows thick and stands straight on its stem looking good to the farmers, so that He may enrage the disbelievers through them. Allah has promised forgiveness and a huge reward to those of them who believe and do good deeds. (Suratul Fath: 29)

This Ayat proves the perfection of the Imaan of the Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum). The first quality mentioned is: “…severe against the disbelievers and merciful amongst themselves…” This is a sign of perfection in Imaan. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) has said: “He who loves for the sake of Allah and hates for the sake of Allah has attained the highest degree of Imaan.”

The second quality is: “… You will see them making Ruku and Sajdah …” This quality is a mark of their perfection in deeds, because Salaah is the most meritorious of all good deeds.

The Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum) were praised even before they came into this world: “…This is their description in the Taurat. And their description in the Injeel is …”

Further on Allah Ta’aala says: “…so that He may enrage the disbelievers through them.”

Abu Urwah Zubairi says he was sitting in one of the sessions of Imam Malik (Rahimahullah) when a person uttered a belittling statement against the Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum). The Imam recited this entire verse. When he came to this portion “…so that He may enrage the disbelievers through them.” He said this warning will apply to anyone who belittles the Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum). (Qurtubi). The Imam did not say that such a person would become a kafir, however he said the warning applies to such a person. It means the conduct of such a person will be like that of unbelievers.

The Imaan of Sahabah is a standard and is confirmed and reaffirmed by Allah Ta’aala

Allah Ta’aala says in the Quraan:

If they bring Imaan like you (O Sabah Radiyallahu Anhum) they would be rightly guided. (Suratul Baqarah: 137)

In another verse Allah Ta’aala says:

If he (Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) obeys you in many matters you will certainly fall into hardship. However Allah Ta’aala has made Iman beloved to you, and made look beautiful in your hearts and made disbelief, sin and disobedience detestable to you. Such people are rightly guided. (Suratul Hujuraat: 7)

In another verse Allah Ta’aala says:

… and made them stick to the word of Taqwa and they were very much entitled to it, and competent for it.” (Suratul Fath: 26)

In another verse Allah Ta’aala says:

You will not find those who believe in Allah and the Akhirah having friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they were of their clan. They are such that Allah has inscribed Imaan on their hearts and has assisted them by His unseen bounty (Suratul Mujadalah: 22)

Allah Ta’aala’s pleasure is on the Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum)

Allah Ta’aala revealed the verses:

Allah Ta’aala is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Allah Ta’aala

In another verse Allah Ta’aala says:

Allah Ta’aala was pleased with the believers when they were pledging allegiance on your hands under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility on them, and rewarded them with a close victory. (Suratul Fath: 18)

Allamah ibnu Abdil Barr Maaliki (Rahimahullah) says:

When Allah Ta’aala is pleased with someone Allah Taa’ala will never be displeased with him

Not even the highest ranking Wali (saint) can reach the status of the lowest Sahabi (Radiyallahu Anhu)

Once a person asked Hazrat Abdullah ibnul Mubarak (Rahimahullah) who was greater between Hazrat Mua’wiyah (Radiyallahu Anhu) and Hazrat Umar bin Abdil Aziz (Rahimahullah)? Hazrat Abdullah ibnul Mubarak (Rahimahullah) replied, “The dust that settled in the nostril of Hazrat Mua’wiyah (Radiyallahu Anhu) when he was in Jihad with Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) is better than Hazrat Umar bin Abdil Aziz (Rahimahullah).” (Al Bidayah Wan Nihayah)

Warning for criticising and reviling the Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum)

Hazrat Abu Sa’eed Al Khudri (Radiyallahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Do not revile any of my Sahabah because (they are so elevated in rank and dear to Allah that) if you spend gold equal to Mount Uhud you would not be entitled to the reward of their spending a mudd (a type of measure approximately 1 kg in weight) or even half a mudd.” (Bukhari #3673, Muslim#2540/2541, Tirmizi #3861, Abu Dawood #4660, Ibnu Majah #161, Mishkaat Pg. 553)

Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (Radiyallahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Fear Allah concerning my Sahabah. Don not make them a target (of criticism and speaking ill). He who loves them, does so because of love for me, and he hates them, hates them because of hatred for me. He who harms them harms me. Who harms me harms Allah. Who harms Allah very soon Allah will seize him (in this world and the next). (Tirmizi #3862, Mishkaat Pg.554)
