Walima before consummation

Nasihah (Advice): The Walima of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam

Sayyiduna Anas Radhiyallahu Anhu says, “Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam camped at a place between Khaybar and Madinah for three days. It was here that he consummated his marriage to Safiyyah Bint Huyayy (Radhiyallahu Anha), after which I invited the Muslims present to a Walima meal that featured neither bread nor meat. He (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) instructed for a leather tablecloth to be spread. He then scattered dates, cheese and butter unto it. This was the Walima of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).” (Bukhari)

Question and Answer:

  1. Salam There is a question. Is walima allowed before Rukhsati as per shariat. Thanks

(Question published as received)

  1. Consummation of a Nikah is not a pre-condition for the validity of a Walima. If a Nikah is not consummated and a Walima took place, the Walima will be valid. However, it is Sunnah to consummate a Nikah before a Walima takes place.

Consummation of a Nikah refers to husband and wife being in seclusion such that there remains no barrier between them to engage in conjugal relations.

Hence, a husband and wife being in total seclusion for a few minutes without engaging in conjugal relations will count as the Nikah having being consummated. (Mabsoot 5/150)
