An urgent appeal is made to the South African public by Rand Water and Municipalities to use water sparingly.

In a public statement, Justice Mohale of Rand Water communicated that, “persistent high temperatures in Rand Water’s area of supply continue to strain its bulk water supply system. The lack of rainfall in Gauteng is exacerbating the situation. The high water demand will cause localised problems in the City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.”

Households are urged to water their lawns with used water, encouraging users to conserve clean running water.

No water-cuts have been issued to the public as yet, but Rand Water is said to reduce supply to municipalities if the demand persists.

“When the situation proceeds there’s going to be a problem and one of the things that we’ll have to do will be to reduce the volumes of water, which will be channeled through the municipality’s’ reservoirs, especially in the evening,” Mohale warned.

Cii has composed ways in which you can conserve water in your homes.

  •  Check faucets and pipes for leaks

Worn-out washers in taps, with small drips cause wastage of 75 litres of water, whilst pipe leaks result in hundreds of litres of water loss.

  •  Don’t use the toilet as a waste basket

Throw cigarette butts and facial tissues in the bin. Every time the toilet chain flushes, 26 litres of clean water is lost.

  •  Install water-saving shower heads

Water-saving shower heads decrease the amount of water fall whilst still enabling you to have a good shower. Also, decreasing shower time can save water.

  •   Insulate water pipes

By doing this, it decreases the time it takes for hot water to reach the tap. Hence, saves clean running water from being wasted.

  •   Turn off the water after you wet your toothbrush

There is no need to keep the water running while brushing your teeth. Just wet your brush and fill a glass for mouth rinsing.

  •    Rinse your razor in the sink

Fill the sink with a few inches of warm water. This will rinse your razor just as well as running water, with far less waste of water.

  •  Use your dishwasher and clothes washer for only full loads
  •   When washing dishes by hand, don’t leave the water running for rinsing

If your have a double-basin, fill one with soapy water and one with rinse water. If you have a single-basin sink, gather washed dishes in a dish rack and rinse them afterwards.

  •    Keep a bottle of drinking water in the fridge.

Running tap water to cool it off for drinking water is wasteful. Store drinking water in the fridge in a safe drinking bottle.
