Are staff responsible for money stolen in a business?

Nasihah (Advice): Honesty leads to Paradise & dishonesty to Hell

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Masood radiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “You must be truthful. Verily, truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to be truthful and encourages honesty until he is recorded with Allah as truthful. And beware of falsehood. Verily, falsehood leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to the Hellfire. A man continues tell lies and encourages falsehood until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.” [Sahih Bukhari]

Question and Answer:

  1. Q. I work as a manager in a spare parts shop. My boss had put+/- 37,000 Kenyan shillings in a drawer below the counter. My boss told me to give it to his friend if he came to the shop. My boss’s friend did not come to the shop to collect it. Unfortunately, the shillings were stolen without my knowledge. My boss did not grant me leave that was Due to me and asked me to bear half the loss of the stolen shillings. As a manager, am I liable for it?

(Question published as received)

  1. If your boss had left money in the drawer below the counter and had told you to give the money to his friend but was stolen in the interim, due to no negligence on your part, you will not be liable to bear the loss of the money that was stolen. Your boss will have to bear the loss of the money that was stolen.
