If a person falls asleep during the Sajdah posture of Salaah, does their Salaah break?

Nasihah (Advice): Perform excessive Sujood

Thawbaan Radiyallahu anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah sallahu alaihi wa sallam said, “You must prostrate frequently before Allah, for you will not prostrate before Allah except that Allah will raise you one status for it and erase one sin for it.” [Sahih Muslim]

Question and Answer:

  1. If a man or woman fall asleep during the Sajdah posture of Salaah, does their Salaah break?

(Question published as received)

  1. If a man falls asleep, while he is in the posture of Sajdah during Salaah (i.e. his forearms are off the ground, away from the body and his stomach is away from the thighs) and he remains in that posture until he awakes, his Salaah remains valid and he may continue performing his Salaah.

However, if a woman falls asleep in the posture of Sajdah during Salaah (i.e. her forearms are on the ground and stomach is attached to her body), her Salaah becomes invalid and she will have to repeat her Salaah.

The difference is that a man effectively has control over his muscles during the Sajdah posture which does not result in exposing his body to the release of wind whereas a woman’s body is relaxed during the Sajdah posture and results in exposing her body to the release of wind. (Al-Bahrur-Raaiq 1/39)
