Participant Fee for a Quran competition

Sadaqatul Fitr announcement: The Sadaqatul Fitr Amount for 2014 in KwaZulu-Natal has been determined at a minimum of R17.00 per person. Residents of other regions should consult with their local Ulama for the Sadaqatul Fitr amount in their region.

Question and Answer:

Q. We want to have a Quraan competition at our school for little kids as encouragement. The proposed plan is to give umrah tickets as the prize and charge each participant a fee of R100. I Just wanted to check if this is permissible

(Query published as received)

To structure the competition in this manner whereby participants have to pay a fee in order to be part of the competition and eligible for the prize is a form of gambling and is not permissible. The competition should either be held free of charge or if there is a charge, the fees should be in lieu of a fixed and specific exchange; for example, a copy of the Qur’an, Islamic book or a specified service (eg; additional Madrasah classes). There should be no fee attached to the prize-giving competition itself.
