Taking food from Walimas, Jalsahs or other functions.

Nasihah (Advice): The worst of food

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (radiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallahu alaihi wa sallam said, “The worst food is that of a Walima to which only the rich are invited while the poor are not invited. And he who refuses an invitation (without a valid reason) disobeys Allah and His Apostle.” [Bukhari]

Question and Answer:

  1. I have noticed in functions such as Walimas and Jalsas that people take food in containers and packets including cakes etc. when they are leaving. Is it permissible to remove food from a function as this is becoming a trend at many gatherings?

(Question published as received)

  1. If a person is invited as a guest to partake of meals, they may eat as much as they wish at the function itself.

However, it is not permissible to take any food or baking home without the permission of the host. This is because permission is given to eat but not to take.

If the host grants permission to take, then it will be permissible to take food items home. [Hindiyyah 5/344]
