Question
Regarding the following Hadith, what is meant by “suffice”? Does it mean that Allah Ta’ala will protect one against misguidance and committing sins?
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) has said:
‘Verily, Allah Ta’ala says: ‘O Son of Adam! Pray to me in the beginning of the day with four units [rak’ahs] and I shall thereby suffice you at the end of it.’
Answer
Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of both Sayyiduna Abud Darda and Sayyiduna Abu Dhar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has graded it as sound (hasanun gharib).
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 475; Also see: Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 1283, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 4 pg. 153, At-Targhib Wat Tarhib, Hadith: 991 and Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 2 pg. 235)
The Muhaddithun have mentioned various meanings for the last portion of this Hadith. Hereunder are a few:
- Protection from calamities and harmful events
- Protection from falling into sin
- Management of all needs and affairs
(Mirqatul Mafatih, Hadith: 1313 and Hashiyatus Sindhi, vol. 4 pg. 202)
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
