Surah Waqi’ah – Surah of Poverty

Question

I have been reading that the Hadiths regarding the benefits of Surah Waqi’ah increasing sustenance maybe weak. What is the authenticity and when should we recite it?

Answer

The Hadith mentions ‘Surah Waqi’ah will become a protection from poverty for the one who recites it every night.’

The Hadith is reliable.

The night starts when Maghrib sets in thus a person may recite it from this time onward.

Question:

I recently heard that the narration regarding Surah Waqi’ah being a safeguard against poverty is weak?

Are all narrations regarding this virtue of Surah Waqi’ah weak?

I understand we can practice on weak narrations for virtues of deeds, but I just wanted clarity on this particular virtue.

JazakAllahu khayran

Answer

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu’anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

Surah Waqi’ah will become a protection from poverty for the one who recites it every night”

The narrator says: “Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu’anhu) would teach this Surah to his daughters too.”

Imam Busiri (rahimahullah) writes: “Abu Ya’la has recorded this with a chain whose narrators are all reliable.”

(Mukhtasar Ithafus sadatil Maharah, Hadith: 6556)

‘Allamah Zayla’i (rahimahullah) has declared the chain of Abu Ya’la as good (jayyid).

Question

We recite Surah Waqi’ah for protection from poverty, but when I went through the meaning I cannot relate it to poverty. What does it really mean and how does it relate to poverty?

Answer

When we are promised a result in the Hadith for particular recitals, not always will we understand the wisdoms behind it. That should not deter us from practice.

Be that as it may, there are many verses in this Surah that discuss the bounty of sustenance from Allah Ta’ala.

Some of them mention the sustenance in the Hereafter (verses: 18-33), while others cite the worldly provisions (verses: 63-73).

In verse: 82, Allah Ta’ala also emphasises on how we should show gratitude for sustenance.

Kindly re-visit the translation of the verses mentioned above.
