The 20-Year War That Crumbled An Empire – Afghanistan

5 Years Since The Great Liberation:

Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim
Today, August 15, marks exactly 5 years since the total liberation of Afghanistan—the day the flag of Tawheed was raised over Kabul and the world witnessed the ultimate defeat of the United States and its foreign coalition.
For 20 years, 10 months, and 8 days (7,250 days), the soil of Afghanistan was the battleground for the longest war in modern Western history. What began on October 7, 2001, as an invasion by the most powerful military alliance on Earth ended on August 15, 2021, in total systemic collapse and a chaotic withdrawal.
Today, we look back at the history, the casualties, the sacrifice, and the ultimate victory granted by Allah Azzawajal.

2001 — The Invasion
The war began under Operation Enduring Freedom. Armed with carpet-bombing B-52s, satellite-guided missiles, thermal imaging, and an infinite war budget, the coalition invaded a war-torn nation.
At the height of the occupation:
• Over 100,000 U.S. troops were deployed on the ground, along with over 50,000 NATO soldiers from 42 different nations.
• Over 100,000 private military contractors were hired to maintain airfields, supply lines, and security.
• Massive fortress-like bases were built across the country, including Bagram Airfield, Kandahar Airfield, and Camp Leatherneck in Helmand.
The coalition operated with air superiority, dropping tens of thousands of bombs over two decades. Yet, despite holding every technological advantage, they could not break the resolve of a population fighting for their faith and freedom.
The true burden of the 20-year war fell upon the civilian population, who faced relentless air strikes, night raids, and military sweeps.
• Mass Civilian Casualties: Independent research, such as Brown University’s Costs of War Project, estimates that over 47,000 Afghan civilians were directly killed in the war, with tens of thousands more dying due to displacement, destruction of healthcare, and poverty.
• Women and Children: Thousands of children were killed or maimed by air strikes, artillery, and unexploded cluster munitions. Entire families were wiped out during midnight raids on remote villages in provinces like Helmand, Kunduz, and Wardak.
• Thousands of young men were dragged into secret detention facilities. Black sites like Bagram Prison (Salt Pit) and Guantanamo Bay became symbols of abuse, where prisoners were held for years without trial, tortured, and denied basic rights. Yet, many of those very prisoners eventually walked out to lead the movement that drove out the occupying forces.
In that era where social media feeds could not be filled with live images or footage, the Muslims of Afghanistan were oppressed in heinous manners, which was not recorded or witnessed. Unlike the current Ghazza genocide which we daily have on the ground access.
The occupying forces envisioned a quick victory. Instead, they were drawn into a grinding, 20-year war of attrition against an enemy that utilized patience, knowledge of the terrain, and relentless ambush tactics.

> By the time the foreign forces admitted defeat:
• 2,456 U.S. military personnel were killed in action.
• 3,923 U.S. contractors were killed.
• Over 1,100 allied NATO soldiers lost their lives.
• 20,700+ U.S. soldiers returned home severely wounded or disabled.
• Over $2.26 trillion was squandered by the U.S. government on the war.

When the coalition announced its final departure schedule, military analysts in Washington predicted that the Western-backed government in Kabul would hold out for months, if not years.
Instead, the entire foreign-backed apparatus collapsed in a matter of weeks.
Province after province fell without prolonged bloodshed as local garrisons surrendered. On August 15, 2021, Mujahideen entered Kabul. The president fled the country, the army dissolved, and the U.S. military was forced into a desperate, chaotic evacuation at Hamid Karzai International Airport.
Just as the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah and cleared the physical idols, the liberation of Kabul shattered the modern political idols of military invincibility, foreign dependence, and secular dominance.

«وَقُلْ جَاءَ الْحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ الْبَاطِلُ ۚ إِنَّ الْبَاطِلَ كَانَ زَهُوقًا»
“And say: ‘Truth has come and falsehood has vanished. Indeed, falsehood is bound to vanish.’”
— Surah Al-Isra (17:81)
How did men with basic rifles, simple sandals, and no air force defeat a coalition backed by trillion-dollar budgets and satellite technology?
The worldly analysis focuses on logistics and geography, but the spiritual truth lies in Imaan, Sabr, and Tawakkul (Reliance upon Allah).
Allah (SWT) reminds us in the Quran:
«كَم مِّن فِئَةٍ قَلِيلةٍ غَلَبَتْ فِئَةً كَثِيرَةً بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ»
“How many a small force has defeated a large force by permission of Allah. And Allah is with the patient.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:249)
And as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ explicitly taught us regarding struggle:
«وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ النَّصْرَ مَعَ الصَّبْرِ، وَأَنَّ الْفَرَجَ مَعَ الْكَرْبِ، وَأَنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا»
“And know that victory comes with patience, relief comes with distress, and with hardship comes ease.” — (Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2516)

Five years on, the lesson of August 15 remains clear to the entire Ummah: no matter how powerful an empire appears, no matter how heavy its weapons or vast its wealth, it cannot overcome a people who rely truly upon Allah Azzawajal.

History shall beat witness to this golden victory, when the so called ‘greatest army of the world’ was defeated by a number much smaller then them in leather sandals and cotton Turbans, powerful with the cries of Takbeer and unyielding Steadfastness on the path of Jihad.
May Allah (SWT) accept the Shuhada of those two decades, to grant justice to the victims of foreign aggression, to heal the scarred, and to grant victory, peace, and unity to the oppressed everywhere across the Muslim world.
TAKBEER — ALLAHU AKBAR!
