Attending school church mass

Nasihah (Advice): Ask Allah for the love of Imaan

Sayyiduna Rifa’ah ibn Rafi’ Radiyallahu Anhu reported that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “O Allah, make Imaan beloved to us and beautify it in our hearts, and make unbelief, wickedness, and disobedience hateful to us, and make us among the rightly-guided. O Allah, let us pass away as Muslims, live as Muslims, and let us be joined with the righteous.” [Al Adab Al Mufrad]

Question and Answer:

  1. Q. My son has to attend a church mass every Friday at school. They do not participate in any prayers but merely observe the prayer. Kindly advise if Islamically this is permissible or not.

(Question published as received)

  1. Islamic Law does not permit Muslims to attend a church mass, even as observers.

While Islam advocates tolerance towards people of other faiths, allowing them the freedom to practice their religion, it however prohibits Muslims from participating in religious observances of other faith groups to protect a person’s Imaan from being corrupted and to preserve Islam from any type of adulteration.

Allah Ta’ala states in the Qur’an, “Say, “O disbelievers! I do not worship that which you worship; nor do you worship the One whom I worship. Nor will I worship those whom you have worshipped; nor will you worship the One whom I worship. To you is your religion, and to me is my religion!” (Surah Kaafiroon)
