Borrowing from Zakaat funds

Nasihah (Advice): Zakaat wards off evil

Sayyiduna Jabir radiyallahu anhu reported: A man from among his people said,“O Messenger of Allah, what do you say regarding a man who pays Zakaat on his wealth?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “Whoever pays Zakaat on his wealth, his evil will depart from him.” (al-Mu’jam al-Awsaṭ)

Question and Answer:

  1. Q. Please advise if an organization can borrow from its Zakaat funds to pay staff salaries and when it has sufficient Lillah funds repay the amount back to Zakaat.

(Question published as received)

  1. It is not permissible to borrow from Zakaat funds. The organisation has been entrusted with the task of distributing Zakaat. Hence, they are restricted to that responsibility. Exceeding that would be impermissible and considered a usurpation of the Zakaat funds. (Shaami 2/269)
