Burning Bakhoor / Oud while fasting

Nasihah (Advice): A scent more pleasant than musk

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “The smell which is emitted from the mouth of a fasting person is more pleasant to Allah than the scent of musk.” [Sunan Tirmidhi]

Question and Answer:

  1. I would like to know if burning oud wood will break or affect the fast?

  1. In principle, it is permissible to burn oud or bakhoor while fasting. This does not affect the fast.

However, one must abstain from intentionally inhaling the smoke of the incense while fasting. This normally occurs if one places his face above the burner and thus directly inhales the smoke. If one intentionally inhales the smoke while fasting, the fast will break and Qadha will be compulsory. (Shaami 2/395)
