Cosatu join anti Obama protests

Qaanitah Hunter –

Trade union federation, Cosatu, have added their weight to the rising opposition to
US President Barack Obama’s visit to South Africa.

Cosatu’s international relations secretary, Bongani Mosuku, called on all workers
and members of tripartite alliance to join in planned protests.

“Cosatu joins the millions of people and workers the world over, particularly on the
African continent and in South Africa, who are outraged at the horrifying record of
US foreign policy in the world,” he said.

Masuku pointed out that the trade union federation was particularly disappointed by
the Obama administration’s record in continuing the “appalling US foreign policy

Among the reasons listed for their opposition to Obama’s visit was his “The
militarisation of international relations for the multinational companies and their
profit-seeking classes in the US”.

Mosuku noted that Cosatu is opposed to the US support for oppressive regimes that
benefit their narrow interests.

“(We must) demand an end to US warmongering and for a new foreign policy based on
respect for human dignity and justice for the people of the world, including the
people of the US itself,” he said.

Obama is expected to visit South Africa at the end of June.

“The world-wide struggle against imperialism must be intensified and the people of
Africa must lead the struggle to reclaim their natural resources and rise against
oppressive dictators of various kinds that undermine their developmental and
democratic aspirations for a better world,” Mosuku said.

Other civil society organisations and student councils have also come out strongly
in protest.

On Thursday night a ‘twitter storm’ by university students and young activists under
the “No You Can’t Obama” banner voiced their protest on social networking sites.
