Financial responsibility towards a wealthy mother

Nasihah (Advice): Strive in serving your parents

Abdullah ibn Amr Radiyallahu Anhu reported: A man came to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), asking permission to wage jihad. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) asked, “Are your parents alive?” The man said yes. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “Then strive in the service of them both.” [Sahih Bukhari]

Question and Answer:

  1. Q. I would like to know to what extent am I responsible for my mother financially in terms of it being fard upon me. My mother is a divorcee. She works and earns well. It is true that I have to take care of her every need and she doesn’t have to spend her own money?

(Question published as received)

  1. If the mother is wealthy and able to provide for herself then it is not the children’s responsibility to provide for her. She will provide for herself from her own funds.

Notwithstanding this, whatever assistance the children render to their mother will accrue great reward. (Hindiyyah 2:289)
