Sky at Sunset

How long after sunset can Maghrib salaah be performed?

Nasihah (Advice): Performing Maghrib Salaah early

Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij radiyallahu anhu reported: ‘We used to offer the Maghrib prayer with Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and then one of us would go out of the Masjid and be able to see the spot his arrow would fall at. (This indicates that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa would perform the Maghrib prayer at the beginning of its time period).’ [Sahih Bukhari]

Question and Answer:

  1. Q. How long after sunset can Maghreb salaah be read?

(Question published as received)

  1. Maghrib Salaah should ideally be performed as soon as the sun has set.

However, the time for Maghrib Salaah lasts until the (white) twilight remains in the sky. (Shaami 1/361)

In South Africa this is approximately an hour and twenty minutes to one and a half hours after sunset, depending on the time of year. These times vary depending on the season.
