Jamiatul Ulama KZN Skills Development Centre (SDC): 10 Year Anniversary Jalsa Report

Date: Wednesday, 25 June 2025 | Venue: NMJ Islamic Centre

Celebrating 10 Years of Empowerment

The Jamiatul Ulama KZN Skills Development Centre (SDC) held a special Jalsa to mark 10 years of uplifting and empowering females through practical skills and Islamic values. The event brought together students, graduates, donors, and the community to celebrate its humble beginnings from a small office in Victoria Street, Durban, and its remarkable growth to a state-of-the-art, dedicated, safe and secure facility in Kenfield Park, Overport.

Special appreciation was extended to Jamiatul Ulama KZN, along with the entire executive board and head office team, whose noble vision, generous financial support, and unwavering guidance have been instrumental in the Centre’s success. Their leadership has played a key role in empowering Zakaat recipients, restoring dignity, and helping individuals build self-reliant, purpose-driven lives.

One of the highlights was the graduation of 11 sewing students, each proudly receiving a sewing machine to kickstart their businesses. Guests also had the chance to buy handmade items from students, giving them exposure and income.

The Centre’s Holistic Model

The Centre runs a 6-month holistic course (Mon–Thurs (8am–3:30pm), Friday (8am–2pm), which focuses on the mind, body, and soul. These include:

  • Sewing, cooking, baking, arts & crafts
  • Free counselling for emotional and mental support
  • Madrassa classes to strengthen Islamic knowledge
  • Character-building that focuses on honesty, patience, and trust

A visual presentation showcased the hands-on work done in cooking classes, and students shared how their lives were transformed – not just by learning a skill, but by gaining confidence, and purpose.

Stories That Touched Hearts

The narratives of past and present students were incredibly impactful. This section highlighted tangible, life-changing outcomes beyond mere certificates. Individual examples included:

  • One graduate who now runs a catering business
  • A mother who now designs and sells clothing
  • Others who found healing through counselling and Islamic learning

A significant portion focused on foreign immigrant students who, having fled their home countries, found safety, support, skills, and renewed commitment to Deen at the Centre, overcoming marginalisation and exploitation.

Giving Back & Moving Forward

A heartfelt appeal was made for community members to donate time or resources. Skilled individuals were encouraged to volunteer by teaching courses. The leadership emphasized the need to expand services to benefit more students.

Volunteer Appreciation

The success of the Jalsa was significantly bolstered by the incredible dedication of our volunteers that were instrumental in every aspect of the event. Their consistent dedication and unwavering commitment were publicly acknowledged and profusely thanked at the conclusion of the Jalsa, with special Duas made for their rewards in this world and the Hereafter.
