Question and Answer:

Is it permissible to listen to music or songs with instruments?

(Question published as received)

The Fuqaha (Jurists) have ruled that all types of music are prohibited, regardless of it being produced using physical instruments, digital means, or any other technological methods.

Allah Ta’ala condemns those involved in ‘idle talk’ in Surah Luqman, Ayah six. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud Radiyallahu Anhu swears an oath that this refers to music.

Rasulullah ﷺ said: “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Allamah Ibn Abidin Rahimahullah states that listening to music has been declared Haraam by consensus of the Ulama. (al Radd al Muhtar 6:349)
