Reciting ‘Hasbiyallahu La Ilaha Illa Hu’ Seven Times daily

Question

I would like to ask the authenticity of the Hadith which states “Whoever says seven times in the morning and evening ‘HasbiyAllahu la ilaha illa huw ‘alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa Rabbul ‘Arshil ‘Adhim‘, Allah Ta’ala will take care of his worries.”

Answer

Imam Abu Dawud (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as the statement of Sayyiduna Abu Darda (radiyallahu ‘anhu) with a sound chain.

However, the nature of this narration is not such that Sayyiduna Abud Darda (radiyallahu ‘anhu) could have thought up applying logic. It will therefore be understood, that he heard this from Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) as is clear from the version cited below.

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 5081. Also see: Targhib, vol. 1 pg. 451, Al Adhkar, Hadith: 236, Nataijul Afkar, vol. 2 pg. 423 and Tafsir Ibn Kathir, end of Surah Tawbah)

Imam Ibnus Sunni (rahimahullah) has recorded the narration as the statement of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), on the authority of Sayyiduna Abud Darda (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(‘Amalul Yawmi Wal Laylah, Hadith: 72)

The Arabic text of the du’a:

حسبى الله لا إله إلا هو عليه توكلت وهو رب العرش العظيم

Translation

Allah is sufficient for me, there is no Deity except Him. I place my trust in Him and He is the Rabb of the great throne

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
