Nasihah (Advice): Eagerness to give Zakaat grants sweetness of faith
Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Muawiyah radiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever does three deeds will taste the sweetness of faith: one who worships Allah alone, one who declares there is no God but Allah and who gives Zakaat from his wealth each year with a cheerful and earnest soul.” [Sunan Abi Dawud]

Question and Answer:
- Q. I do landscape paintings on canvases as a hobby. I am unsure as to whether I want to sell them, keep them or give them as gifts. If I wish to sell them, will I have to pay zakaat for them? Will I also have to pay Zakaat for the tools and materials which I used to paint the landscapes? I have paint and paintbrushes because painting is my hobby. Do I have to pay Zakaat for the paint and paintbrushes as well?

- In principle, there is no Zakaat on paintings, canvas, paint and paint brushes that were not purchased for the purpose of trade. [Shaami 2/262]
If you wish to sell any paintings, Zakaat will only be compulsory after the paintings have been sold on the cash received. This will be added to your other Zakaatable assets and Zakaat will be paid on the amount that remains on your Zakaat calculation date. [Binaayah 3/384]
