Nasihah (Advice): The virtue of Zakaat
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever carries out three deeds will taste the sweetness of Imaan: one who worships Allah alone, one who declares there is no God but Allah and one who gives Zakaat from his wealth each year happily.” [Sunan Abi Dawud]

Question and Answer:
- Is Zakaat payable on 9 Carat Jewellery?
(Question published as received)
- As a general rule, Zakaat is payable on Jewellery that predominantly contains Gold or Silver. Therefore, Zakaat is payable on 24 carat jewellery (100% gold or silver), 18 carat jewellery (75% gold or silver) and 14 carat jewellery (58% gold or silver).
In regards to 9 carat jewellery, it does not predominantly contain Gold or Silver (38% gold or silver). However, the Gold or Silver content can easily be removed by Jewellers through a process of refining (melting).
Thus, as the Gold and Silver content of 9 carat jewellery can be easily removed, it would be considered separately and individually from the jewellery. As such, Zakaat will be payable on 9 carat jewellery. (Shaami 2/302 – Al-Bahrur-Raaiq 2/245 – Fataawa Darul Uloom Zakariyya 3/109-111)
