Syria’s civil war and refugee crisis are poised to be the worst humanitarian disaster of our time. As the war intensifies, the situation is becoming too overwhelming to understand, even for the strong hearted.
A few facts on the Syrian Conflict:
The nearly 3 year old uprising against Assad has left more than 130,000 people dead and forced more than 2.3 million to seek refuge abroad. The UN estimates that over 4 million people are internally displaced and that almost 7 million are in need of humanitarian assistance inside Syria. When you also consider refugees, nearly 40 percent of the country’s population of 22 million is suffering, whether they still remain in the country or have escaped across the borders.
According to the UN, more than half of all Syrian refugees are under the age of 18. Most have been out of school for months, if not years. The youngest are confused and scared by their experiences, lacking the sense of safety and the home they once belonged to. The older children are forced to grow up too fast, finding work and taking care of their family in desperate circumstances.
One fact is simple:
Millions of Syrians need our help. And the more aware people are of what is going on, the more we can build a global response to reach them. Our lifesaving work is only possible with your knowledge and support.
In this regard The Jamiat KZN is continuing its Relief Operations (click here for Phase 1) with its Phase 2 Project.
Syria Relief Phase 2: This is primarily aimed at providing shelter to homeless refugees in Turkey, in addition to their other urgent needs. To this end high quality, fireproof tents were identified (see pic) which are able to accommodate a family of at least 6. Cost per tent was €350, approximately R5000.
600 tents were purchased at a total cost of €210000 euros, approximately 3 million Rands.
Our tents have been delivered to an area on Turkish/Syrian Border called Oncupinar in Killis and construction will take place soon as per the layout shown here: SYRIA TENT VILLAGE. We await confirmation as to when the construction has been completed and allocations of the tents have been made.
Insha Allah a Jamiat Kzn delegation will go over for the handing over of the tents as soon as people have been moved to the area and allocations made.
As part of this Phase 2,The Jamiat Kzn is currently collecting funds for food, medicines and clothing which are much needed and these items will be distributed to the refugees who will be moving into the new tents..
Therefore we ask you to donate towards this project and play your part in securing the welfare of our suffering brethren of Syria. No amount is too small!
