Nasihah (Advice): The Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said: “It is not permissible for her (a woman) to leave the home without the permission of her husband and it is not permissible for a woman to travel the journey of three days (the Safar distance which amounts to approximately 78kms) without being accompanied by a Mahram” (as-Sunan al-Kubra by Bayhaqi, Hadith #: 10420, Narrated by Ibn Umar)

Question and Answer:
Q. I am married and live with my mother and sister.One Alim said that my mother will be a Mahram for my sister if we all have to travel together. Is this correct?
A. Your mother is not a Mahram for your sister when travelling. If your sister wishes to travel for a distance of approx. 78kms or more, she has to be accompanied by a male relative who is a Mahram to her, eg, her uncle, Baligh nephew etc.
