Our Burial Organisations & Dedicated Volunteers – Hidden Gems of the Muslim Community

The Muslim community has many hidden gems. Men and women who work tirelessly behind the scenes and out of the limelight to provide invaluable services to our community. We salute these unsung heroes.
From this blessed category is our burial organizations and societies located in cities, towns, Masaajid and Musallahs across our country. These are the organizations who take care of all the processes required for a speedy and smooth burial, which we often take for granted.
Their tireless efforts start from transporting the deceased, performing the ghusl & shrouding, arranging the grave, attending to the legalities and paperwork and finally for the deceased to be buried, in the quickest time possible! What a noble and worthy act, which ensures that the burial is not unduly delayed and also eases the hardship and pain of the grieving family. Those who render this service do so voluntarily, offering their time, effort and dedication with no monetary gain. That means that our burial organizations are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.
Consider for a moment the dedication and sacrifice required. Death waits for no person. It may be the weekend, it may be the day of Eid, it may be the day of your child’s wedding, but when the call comes, our brothers and sisters are ready to respond. At times, it is the middle of the night and the phone starts ringing. The person is in the deepest of sleep but they awake to respond to the ghusl and kafan of their deceased brother or sister, whether poor or rich and many a time a person they may have never met in their lives.
Such dedication and sacrifice cannot go unacknowledged nor unrewarded. That is why Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has declared, “Whoever performs Ghusl for the deceased, Allah will pardon him forty times, (in the narration of Mu’jamul Kabeer, it is stated Allah will forgive 40 of his major sins), and whoever shrouds the deceased (kafan), Allah will clothe him with the silk garments of Jannah, and whoever digs a grave for the deceased and buries him therein, he will be rewarded as though he has provided an abode for the deceased to reside therein until the Day of Qiyaamah.” (Mustadrak) This Hadith vividly portrays the value such people have in the sight of Allah Ta’ala and His Rasool Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam.
We, as the Muslim community, should support our burial organizations, as best we can, especially in our current climate. Alhamdulillah, following calls for assistance from burial organizations due to the increasing Covid-19 related deaths, many dedicated volunteers have stepped forward. Their assistance is tremendously valued and appreciated.
May Allah Ta’ala reward and bless all those who are involved in this noble work and take our burial organizations from strength to strength, Ameen.
