Nasihah (Advice): Divorce – undertaken seriously or in jest
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said that marriage and divorce are treated seriously whether it was undertaken seriously or in jest. (Abu Dawood)

- Is a Talaaq via sms, whatsapp, etc. valid?

- A Talaaq (divorce) issued verbally or in writing is valid. (Shaami)
Accordingly, a Talaaq (divorce) via sms, whatsapp etc. is also valid as it is considered to be a written Talaaq (divorce).
However This is not the correct manner/method and procedure of giving talaaq which is taken very seriously in Islam but sadly it is taken very lightly amongst Muslims nowadays. Talaq ( divorce ) should only be used as a last resort when everything else eg. counselling, therapy, consulting senior family members etc fails.
