Uncertainty on being able to fast

Nasihah (Advice): The Dua of a Fasting Person

Anas ibn Malik radiyallahu anhu reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “The supplications of three are not rejected: the supplication of a parent, the supplication of a fasting person and the supplication of a traveller.” [Bayhaqi]

Question and Answer:

  1. I have a medical condition due to which the doctor advised me not to fast. I paid the Fidya money for the Ramadaan that past. Insha-Allah I want to fast this year. If I am unable to fast what is the ruling?

(Question published as received)

  1. The payment of Fidya is only applicable if the reason for which one cannot fast is a permanent one.

In your email, you mentioned that you hope to fast the coming Ramadaan. Thus if your inability to fast was a temporary condition and not a permanent one, then payment of Fidya will not apply to you.

Qadha for the missed fasts will be necessary.

The fasts will remain your responsibility to make Qadha of which you must fulfil as per your ability. The previously paid Fidya in this case will be counted as Nafl Sadaqah.

If the stage is reached in your life when you are permanently unable to fast, you will then pay the Fidya amount. [Tahtaawi pg. 688]
