Witness of Nikah

Question:

Assalâmu ’alaikum

Is it permissible for the bridegroom or bride’s maternal or paternal grandparents to act as a Wakeel or witness to the marriage contract?

Answer:
It is permissible for any of them to act as wakeel. It should however be noted that for the validity of nikah two adult, mature, Muslim, male witnesses are required. Alternatively one adult, mature, Muslim, male and two adult, mature, Muslim, females would suffice.
