One Reaps only what one Sows

Hazrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb Alaihir Rahmah said that once a man came to visit him from Kanpur. His father was a very pious person. This individual asked Hazrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb Alaihir Rahmah why Ulama of today are not like the Ulama of the former times such as Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi Alaihir Rahmah etc.?

Hazrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb Alaihir Rahmah replied, “If you could perhaps first answer me why are you not like your father? Your father was a very pious person. Why are you not like him?

“Then Hazrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb Alaihir Rahmah added that just as the Ustaads (teachers) were, so were the students. Nowadays the Ustaads and teachers are like me so the students are like me also. Furthermore, in those days people used to work extremely hard to earn Halaal and they used to refrain from Haraam. From these pure Halaal earnings they used to contribute with utmost sincerity to the running of the Madrasahs. Therefore with the Halaal earnings, the effects also used to be good and so sincere, committed and dedicated Ulama used to be produced. However, nowadays there is not much differentiation between Halaal and Haraam. Man chases after wealth, regardless of how it reaches him, even if it be in a Haraam manner.

From these earnings they contribute to the Madrasahs, and even if some wealth is Halaal generally the contributors lack sincerity. The end result is that as the wealth is, so is the effect.
