Bribery and corruption is the order of the day in many government departments. Our work cannot be complete or done without giving Vitamin “B” Bribery. In India the term is casual “Chai Paani” (“For my tea and Water”). Nabi Kareem Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has very clearly prohibited this act of bribery and has mentioned, “The giver and taker of Rishwat (bribery) both will be in the fire.”

However, why do we have corrupt officials? None other than our Beloved Nabi Kareem Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has given the reason for us being surrounded by such corrupt officials. Sayyidina Ali Radhiyallaahu Anhu narrates that Nabi Kareem Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “When my Ummah will begin to harbour hatred for the Ulama, and when they shall contract marriages in search of riches and wealth (instead of religiousness and piety), Allah Ta’ala will set over them four kinds of punishment: famine, oppression by kings and rulers, dishonesty by ruling officers, and continuous attacks by the enemy.” (Haakim)

Now the big question: Are these evils not prevalent in the Ummah today? Without doubt these sins are most definitely found. Our helpline to remove corruption, oppression, famine and attacks by the enemies (remember the thieves, hijackers and murderers are also our enemies), is to give up all those sins that are the cause of these calamities. Therefore, remember that abstention from sin is the solution and our protection.
